I have chaired many panels featuring high profile guests: politicians, university vice-chancellors, charity leaders and policy experts. Journalists are skilled at putting panellists at their ease, encouraging audiences to participate – even virtually – but making sure that speakers answer the questions put to them and don’t dissemble or obfuscate with jargon.

Formats can vary depending on the type of event, from a Question Time-style panel with audience participation to a one-to-one interview with a guest speaker.
